Smartphone Dilema
I understand the rule states that we are not to use smartphones, and my husband and I are 100% on board with that. We've even purchased a couple of flip phones to activate when we're ready.
Our dilema is that we are in a situation where we have to rely on our smartphones. It's not in our budget to get a computer and internet, so the only way we have to do necessary things such as pay bills, is on our smartphones. But having a smartphone is a terrible temptation to waste time and play online (or entertain the kids).
I'm looking for any advice for our situation, to follow the rule and still put up with having a smartphone.

I had to upgrade after the 2020 new year. One thing that has really helped me pay less attention to the phone is that I went into the Settings to “Sound and Haptics” and turned off all of the sounds for text, email, notifications, etc. and just left the ringtone active. The phone is much quieter now and is less distracting. While I’m working during the day, unless I’m expecting a phone call, it stays in a locked lateral file drawer with other personal belongings. Out of sight - Out of mind! When I’m at home it sits on a counter in the den while I’m doing other things.
I think it’s all how you don’t let it become an obsession and also not become something that you’re so co-dependent on each day that if you don’t have it it’s going to negatively affect you.
I like how quiet it is now. Once I stop working I won’t need a smart phone. During and after hurricane Ida, it was the only means of being connected with my work network. I do look forward to not having it one day though.
